PNG vs. JPG vs. WebP: Which Format Should You Choose?

Selecting the wrong file format can make your website load slowly, render your transparent graphics with black boxes, or blur your text. It can also cause portal upload errors if a government or job site doesn’t support modern file types.

Here is a simple guide to understanding when to use PNG, JPG, and WebP.

1. JPEG / JPG (Photographs & Forms)

JPEG is the most widely compatible standard for photos and document uploads.

  • Compression: Lossy (reduces file sizes by discarding less visible color details).
  • Best Used For: Complex photos, portraits, and all job boards or government upload portals (Workday, Taleo, visa forms).
  • Avoid For: Logos, text screenshots, and graphics requiring transparent backgrounds.

2. PNG (Screenshots & Transparent Logos)

PNG is designed for high-clarity graphics and transparency.

  • Compression: Lossless (saves files pixel-for-pixel, ensuring zero quality loss).
  • Best Used For: Logos, UI screenshots, text diagrams, and digital signatures requiring a transparent background.
  • Avoid For: Large photos, as PNG files will be extremely heavy and slow to load.

3. WebP (Websites & Blogs)

Developed by Google, WebP provides superior compression to speed up modern web pages.

  • Compression: Hybrid (supports both high compression and lossless transparency).
  • Best Used For: Website designs, blog post images, and loading speed optimization. WebP images are typically 25% to 30% smaller than JPGs or PNGs of the same quality.
  • Avoid For: Government portal submissions, visa portals, or offline document sharing, as many legacy systems do not recognize the WebP extension.

Direct Format Selection

In our tool, you can switch formats instantly using the top-level Output Format bar:

  • JPG — Best for photos and form uploads.
  • PNG — Best for transparent layers and crisp graphics.
  • WEBP — Smallest for web pages, but check portal compatibility first.
